How to arrive

In les Escoles Pies square. The sculptures of the most prominent members of the Borja family are located at the door, among them Francesc, founder of the University and Duke of Gandia.

At present, it hosts the exhibition hall Coll Allas, the headquarters of the UNED, the municipal offices, the residence of els Pares Escolapis and el Col•legi.

Located outside the north of the town, next to la Porta de Valencia, where there was a small church dedicated to Sant Sebastià. The creation of the old University by the Duke Francesc de Borja was established, obtaining the foundation of the school by the document of 3th December, 1544. The Duke, requested a license to give el Col•legi to the newly created Companyia de Jesús (Society of Jesus), Pope Paul III granted it on 20th April, 1548, and they acquired it on 10th May of the same year.

During the first stage of el Col•legi’s construction, the cells, several rooms, the refectory, nursing, offices and part of the classrooms were made. All it was left to complete the academy, more classrooms that had to be built next to the church. In 1549, he became the University for papal bull on 4th November, confirmed by Emperor Charles V. The church of Sant Sebastià was demolished in 1605 to build a larger one.

The new church is a single ship with a cruise, which stands out in the plant, side chapels and dome in the cruise whose shells represent the four shields of the Ducal House. Between the years 1883 and 1884 remodellings were made to the church, providing it with a chapel of Communion in the front of the sacristy, placing the entrance to the door of the head of the church that previously led to the orchard.

In 1767 the expulsion of the Jesuits was decreed, when it was abandoned was used as a house of mercy. Two new facades were created, that of el Col•legi square, and the other in l’Albereda del Prado, according to the inscription of the cloister. The facade that looks at the square is full of balconies, while the other is arranged by means of small quadrangular windows. It was never used as a House of Mercy, only 50 rooms were for poor families. By Royal Order of 28th December, 1806, els Escolapis were established, holding up to nowadays.
